Volkswagen GTD pricing announced. Quick, clean fun starts at £21,850

Volkswagen just announced pricing for its hot new diesel-engined GTI brother, the Golf GTD, at least in the UK. The new performance diesel will start at £21,850 RRP when it arrives in British dealerships on June 22. That MSRP is for the three-door, six-speed manual model. Add £585 for the five-door model and £1,305 for the six-speed DSG automatic gearbox, and the top rung begins at £23,740. That’s well over $30k USD in a direct currency conversion, but we know it never works that way.

If and when it arrives Stateside, we hope VW can keep the price in the mid 20s. Actually we’ve heard from someone close to VW that says the GTD has popped up in the order screen at just below $22,000 for the three-door and $22,500 for the five-door model. Nothing official yet, but we’ll be sure to keep you posted.

However many doors or whichever gearbox you choose, the new Mk VI Golf GTD will be powered by the new refined 2.0L (1,968 cc) common-rail TDI engine, churning out 170 PS (168 hp) and a healthy 258 ft-lbs of torque. Zero to 62 mph should come up in about 8.1 seconds on your way to a top speed of 138 mph. Not too shabby, especially when you consider it will have very good CO2 emissions (just 139 g/km) and average 53.3 mpg Imperial (44.4 mpg U.S.). That will give it a range greater than 640 miles on a single tank. That’s a whole lot of smiles between fill-ups. More details in the press release after the jump.[Source: Volkswagen]
