New reports this afternoon indicate that Swedish tax authorities have effectively shut down Saab until the automaker pays back unpaid customs duties. General Motors confirmed this morning that Saab’s days as a part of the Detroit-based company are numbered. The Swedish brand has filed paperwork with courts in its home country for reorganization that would lead to its independence. General Motor’s hope that Saab might continue on as a standalone automaker in 2010 with a little financial assistance from the government of Sweden has hit a major snag. Sweden’s Enterprise and Energy Minister Maud Olofsson has said that she’s “deeply disappointed in General Motors,” and calls its actions “irresponsible.”
